One catch with having a sticky post so that it is the first item a visitor sees is that it displays a date which increasingly makes the blog appear at first site to be not current.
Is is possible to suppress the date on the sticky post?
Lots of possibilities here for puns about sticky date puddings, currants, etc.

Des - sorry I missed this the first time around. Unfortunately it is not possible to mask the date on a sticky post, though this is a good point and I have noted it on our enhancements list.
You could try bringing attention to this type of content in a different way, perhaps you could create a custom component for your sidebar which gives a summary of your sticky-type content and link to a Web Page with the full information.
