On the "Notifications" page in the "Publishing Defaults" of the "Settings & Security" section at the top of the page is "Allow readers to signup for new article and comment notices." If this is checked, it will allow readers to signup. If this is not checked, it will not allow readers to signup.
The site I built for www.washingtonspeechwriters.com contains sections that are intended for approved visitors only ("members.") The goal is to disallow readers who are not members from signing up for new article and comment notices. But, does unchecking the "Allow readers..." box also prevent everybody from signing up for RSS feeds from this site?
Is there a practical way with BlogHarbor to restrict content to members only pages but also allow the members to use RSS? |

Does this mean you have created a category or categories and restricted access to them as explained here, then granted access to these areas only to your members as explained here? (Using Groups as explained here might be useful too.)
If so, then new article and comment notifications for those restricted categories will indeed be restricted to those who have permission to view those categories.

No, it does not. It only prevents subscribers to email notifications and is not related to the RSS feed.
However, your RSS feed will contain only those articles which are public; content from restricted categories is not included in your public RSS feed.
If your RSS aggregator supports Secure RSS (as many now do), then you can retrieve a version of the RSS feed which contains the restricted items. The URL of the Secure RSS feed is the same as the regular RSS feed, but add a ?secure=1 to the end of the URL.
So if your RSS feed was at the URL of
http://demo.blogharbor.com/blog/index.xml
then the secure feed is at
http://demo.blogharbor.com/blog/index.xml?secure=1
If your restricted category is at
http://demo.blogharbor.com/blog/News
then the RSS feed for that category is at
http://demo.blogharbor.com/blog/News/index.xml
while the secure version of the category RSS feed is at
http://demo.blogharbor.com/blog/News/index.xml?secure=1
Aggregators which support secure RSS allow you to enter your username and password and retrieve the RSS feed for restricted categories. So you can create a restricted category and be sure that the content is only available to those with the proper authorization, whether they are viewing the blog or its RSS feed. |
