I have been running Google ads on my blog for several months now. The "pro" is that you make some money, the "con" is that you no longer have a commercial free website, and there are undoubtedly people who would rather not see the ads.
Highly recommend the Adsense forum at www.webmasterworld.com, which has been very helpful in learning the ropes.
Chitika mini malls are also worth exploring. Some very targeted niche blogs find that they make more money than Adsense.
A great blog for learning how to make money from your blog is:

I use Google on my blog too. I'm well away from supporting myself with affiliate marketing (traffic too low) but am more than paying for my hosting and stats services and putting some dollars in my pocket. There are bloggers out there though that are generating 4- and 5-figure monthly revenue with Google (the best revenue-generating blogs tend to be product-focused).
The success of Google is definitely dependent on your content. For a while, I was getting good ads from them and generating a growing income stream. Most recently, I'm getting yucky, low-value blog and other filler ads. Think it's a short-term stumble because of some content I had most recently posted relative to their last spidering. At least I hope so because I'd like to get my revenues back up!
I also like Chitika, although it seems to work best for product-focused sites. The click-through is more generous than Google, though, and tech support is excellent. You might also want to check out Yahoo.
Problogger is a great resource for affiliate marketing. Go to
