Is there any way to turn off trackbacks entirely? My trackbacks are set for moderator status. Somehow I have been picking up advertizement trackbacks like "rent a van" or "buy meds" etc...on a daily basis.
Is there something that I am doing that is attracting these adds to my blog?
I think I finally have a real trackback. Someone sent me a message saying they have a similar article on their site, but I cannot figure out how to follow the trackback to its source. Please let me know how to investigate these trackbacks so I can discern which are advertisments, and which are worthy of approving. Thanks. |

There is nothing you are doing that is attracting these trackbacks, beyond simply having a blog. Spammers use automated methods to find blogs and spam them, it's not personal.
At this time it's not possible to disable trackbacks globally, but you can do so on a per blog basis.
You should be able to view the URLs of a trackback as explained here. |

If the one you think might be a real trackback is from "IeriWinner", it's just more spam. That person always leaves a message saying they've blogged about the same topic (or words to that effect), and please check their site. The link is faked. I just had 75 (seventy-five) trackbacks Monday night from that one, and that was the 3rd or 4th time they've hit me (that I know about).
Usually, if their link is valid, it's because it's a porn site.

We're a community. We should help each other.
When I got my first trackbacks (a year ago in January), I was all excited ... until I checked them out. Then I was embarrassed and angry (they were all porn). I didn't understand about trackback spam, but when I asked about it, John explained it to me.
BlogHarbor has software that catches a lot of the trackback spam, most of it, I think. But sometimes there's a period when the sheer volume of it overwhelms their safeguards. That's when we see it showing up on our dashboard pages. Nine months ago we had a spell when there was a lot of it getting through the protection. I found the thread where zoli and I were moaning about it; it's at http://forums.blogharbor.com/viewtopic.php?t=1994 I was whining about eleven that time. I think John's prediction in that thread has come through, or is on its way.
All we can do is just keep an eye on our Dashboards. Those lists are a handy way to keep track of what's happening. After a while, a blog gets to be so big that you just can't check all of it. I've now got more than 400 posts, and more than 40 categories. That's far too many to watch for something happening to all of the pages, but Blogware has great management tools.
In fact, there are so many management apps in Blogware that probably most of us bloggers will never know (or even need) all of the features. That's a Good Thing for people like me who don't want to have to do the geeky management stuff the hard way, ourselves. And John is very patient about helping us get the results or effects we want. |
